When it comes to achieving a flawless smile, composite bonding has become one of the most popular cosmetic dental treatments available. It’s a quick and non-invasive way to correct imperfections like chips, gaps, and discoloured teeth, giving you a beautiful, natural-looking smile in no time. Let’s discuss what composite bonding is, its benefits, the procedure, and why composite veneers with Dr Charles M Brandon, might be the perfect solution for you.
What is Composite Bonding?
Composite bonding, also known as dental bonding, is a cosmetic dental procedure that uses tooth-coloured resin material to improve the appearance of teeth. The resin is artfully applied, shaped, and polished to blend seamlessly with your natural teeth, offering a perfect transformation of your smile. The process can address a variety of dental concerns including:
Chipped or cracked teeth
Gaps between teeth
Discoloured or stained teeth
Misshapen teeth
Slightly misaligned teeth
How Does Composite Bonding Work?
The best composite bonding is a skilful procedure that typically takes one visit to complete, but there’s a few stages to the planning to ensure you get the best shape, shade and design. Here’s what you can expect during the process:
Consultation: One of the team will evaluate your teeth and take many photos and a digital scans. Dr Charles Brandon will then hold a video or in-person consultation to discuss your desired results and ensure your goals are achievable and to give you an accurate treatment plan and cost estimate for your treatment.
Finance Planning: 10 or 20 teeth cases are an investment and it’s important to have an opportunity to discuss your payment options with our patient coordinator.
Prior To Treatment: In most cases, patients are required to visit the dental therapist for hygiene sessions prior to composite bonding. This is to establish gum health so that the gum line and margins of the bonding are seamless and contour as close to your healthy anatomy as possible.
Digital Smile Design: Once you have achieved optimum dental and oral health, Dr Brandon will create you a digital smile design. This requires tour involvement, and can include a number of revisions to make sure the treatment outcome we are working towards is what you had envisioned.
The Day of Treatment: Yes, day. We will book several hours for your treatment and reserve the clinic for you, for the day. The digital smile design is trialled and any adjustments to the planned shade, shape or design are adjusted, on your teeth. This is a vital step to ensuring the artfully placed layer composites are exactly what you have in mind.
Composite Bonding: The composite resin is applied to the tooth, shaped, and moulded in small layers and increments of varying shades, opacities and stains to achieve the most flawless and natural looking result possible.
Polishing: Finally, the composites are polished in stages to achieve a smooth and natural appearance. The result is a tooth that looks and feels like your natural enamel.
How Long Does Composite Bonding Last?
On average, composite bonding can last anywhere from 5 to 10 years with proper care. However, its longevity depends on factors like:
Oral hygiene: Regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups are crucial to maintaining bonded teeth.
Diet: Limit the consumption of staining foods and drinks like coffee, tea, and red wine. These can cause discoloration of the resin over time.
Habits: Clenching, grinding and biting hard objects like ice, pens, or your nails can lead to chips or cracks in the bonded teeth.
Regular dental visit: Your dentist can check the condition of the bonded teeth during your routine visits and suggest maintenance or touch-ups if needed.
Composite maintenance: All composite will require a maintenance regime to ensure its lustre, shine and shade.
Who is a Good Candidate for Composite Bonding?
Composite bonding is a great option for anyone looking to improve the appearance of their smile, particularly for those with minor cosmetic concerns. However, it may not be suitable for everyone. If you have significant tooth decay, gum disease, or major alignment issues, we may recommend other treatments, such as pre-treatment orthodontics or even crowns.
